Update on Mileage of BioDME trucks

The 10 Volvo BioDME trucks are accumulating mileage during the field test. The trucks have now passed 720 000 km in total as can be seen in the figure below.

Chemrec, one of the partners in the BioDME project, launched an up to date report from the BioDME plant in May 2012. DME truck and fuelling station to be shown at World Bioenergy 2012

Volvo will show one BioDME truck at World Bioenergy 2012 in Jönköping, Sweden, May 29-31. On Thursday, May 31, a DME fuelling station will also be shown. In this study visit you are welcome to see a Volvo truck filling up BioDME at a Preem fuelling station.

Follow the progress of the field test

Ten Volvo Bio-DME trucks have now been in regular operation and the results surpass expectations. A short while ago the first of the ten trucks broke through the 100,000 kilometre barrier. All told, the trucks have covered 400,000 kilometers as can be seen in the graph below. Follow the progress on the Field Test web page.

Promising future for BioDME as a vehicle fuel

The Bio-DME project aims to assess whether there is a market for Bio-DME (Di-Methyl-Ether) for commercial vehicles. Halfway through the two-year project the preliminary results show that Bio-DME already functions in daily commercial operations. Read more in the Volvo Trucks press release.

Denmark reduces it support to bioethanol – the way forward is DME and methanol

Swedish news media ”Ny Teknik” reports that Danish researchers found that it was better to support production of DME and methanol compared to second generation generation bioethanol. ”-Drop the focus on second-generation ethanol. The route goes through gasification to methanol and DME, it is a very effective way of getting energy from forest residues and straw, the researchers found. The government listened and immediately drew back all the support of ethanol production”.

BioDME as efficient as diesel for heavy duty vehicles

Henrik Salsing held his dissertation at Chalmers University of Technology in Gotherburg, Sweden on December 2, 2011. In his PhD work he studied DME combustion in heavy duty diesel engines. ”-Combustion of diesel fuel in a piston engine is a process that has been optimized for a hundred years, so it is hard to come up with revolutionary improvements there. But if we change to an optimal fuel and adjusts the engine after we can make a big difference. That’s what I have shown.”

Pictures from loading BioDME to trailer available

BioDME is produced from black liquor and sent to a 200 m3 large storage tank in Piteå. A dedicated DME trailer (34 m3) is loaded with BioDME and distributes the BioDME to 4 filling stations in Sweden. Below are a few pictures taken during one loading of BioDME to the trailer during December 2011.

Media interest in Volvo Trucks’ alternative drivelines
